Going to bed and waking up at approximately the same time of day, including weekends, will help you develop a restful sleep pattern. Though it is enticing to stay out late on the weekends, it will help your sleeping if you are consistent with your schedule. Try not to nap as this can interfere with your nightime routine.
Wear comfortable sleeping clothes in a quiet, dark room that is cool and well-ventilated. Remove your television, computers, games, notepads and other distractions. Establish a routine that helps you to relax before going to bed (i.e., reading, soothing music, warm bath, warm glass of milk). Try not to work on stressful tasks before bedtime such as paying bills, leftover work, competitions, and family problems as this may carry over and affect your rest. Avoid interruptions of all kinds.
Avoid Stimulants
Alcohol, coffee, tea, chocolate, drinks with stimulants, and smoking all interfere with a good night's sleep. Try to keep them to a minimum, particularly late in the day. Though alcohol may initially make you tired, drinking will lead to a much less restful night.
Regular excercise is a great benefit to your health and your sleeping regimen. But, be careful about physical activity too near your bedtime. Excercise earlier in the day, no closer to 3-4 hours before sleep. Too much or too little food can make you uncomfortable when you go to sleep. Avoid rich, fatty, spicy and acidic foods. Don't go to bed hungry or it could play a role in keeping you awake. A light snack can contribute to a restful night. Though a nice glass of warm milk may be helpful, try not to drink too many fluids as this may wake you during the night.
Upgrade Your Sleeping System
Your body needs good support, a firm mattress and a comfortable pillow to increase your sleeping pleasure. It is important to have room to turn and stretch, easily. Though you may like having your partner closeby, this may cause both of you to lose some sleep. You may need to get a larger mattress. What was once a comfortable bed may have outlived its normal years of use. It's always helpful to experiment with different mattresses, pillows and bedding. Technology has brought advances over the years to the sleeping industry, so you may want to check out the latest changes.
